WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO STAY AWAY FROM PHTHALATES?
Phthalates are endocrine disruptors and these chemicals have been linked to ADHD, asthma, diabetes, and breast cancer, along with a number of reproductive issues. However, phthalates pose the greatest risk to children who may put their contaminated clothing in their mouths. This is why it’s important to stay away from phthalates because not only are you putting your own health at risk but the health of children at risk as well.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO STAY AWAY FROM APOs?
APEOS are important as well to stay away from because they are slow to biodegrade and they tend to bioaccumulate. APEOS move up the food chain and ultimately to us. Research has shown that when APEOS biodegrade, their byproducts tend to have a higher toxicity, estrogenic activity, and persistence. APEOS invade the human body with estrogen-like effects and are harmful to hormones, which poses a risk of reduced sperm count in men. APEOS are also a risk to aquatic organisms and an endocrine disruptor in higher animals, thus posing a risk to humans as well.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT
TO STAY AWAY FROM PFAS and PFCs?
PFAS are suspected to be a human carcinogen and these chemicals can cause serious health effects at high enough levels. Health effects include: decreased fertility, hormonal changes, increased cholesterol, weakened immune system response, increased cancer risk, and growth and learning delays in infants and children.
These substances are referred to as ‘forever chemicals’ because of their strong chemical bond which makes it harder for the chemical to break down and remain in our bodies and environment. Due to their strong chemical bond, they are able to bioaccumulate. In perspective, if production that includes the use of these chemicals ended today, PFAS could still be found in our bodies and environment for several years to come.
PFA chemicals can be found in leather and textiles. Material labels that contain the words Gore-Tex or Teflon may signal the presence of PFAS, which are commonly found in outdoor gear and "moisture-wicking" workout clothes. Finished textiles, such as printed, natural and synthetic, and uniforms are also usually found with the risk of containing PFAS.
